Overview

The Faithful texture pack is a classic, not only because it was the first of its kind, but also because it succeeds so thoroughly at its singular goal: reinterpreting the default textures at double or quadruple the resolution, while keeping everything that Minecraft players love about the default game; thus staying faithful to the original look of the game (hence the name).

To understand the current state of Faithful, it's important to understand the pack's history. The texture pack dates back to 2010, at the time created by just one person by the name of Vattic. Later on Vattic disappeared from the internet, and the project was taken over by someone who claimed to have been given the rights. Many of Faithful's contributors moved to work on a new open source texture pack called Compliance, with the same goal and general style as Faithful. However, when it later came to light that Faithful's new 'owner' did not in fact hold the rights to the brand, the Faithful project was taken back by the community and merged with the open source Compliance project — and the pack we now refer to as Faithful is what used to be Compliance. Vattic's original textures are still maintained in a sister project known as Classic Faithful.

As a result of this history, Faithful is not just one pack but rather a collection of open source community-maintained texture packs, which can make things quite confusing. In short, standard Faithful, which uses the newer Compliance textures, is referred to as simply Faithful, and comes in two resolutions — 32x and 64x. The 32x version is not just a downscale of the 64x version — it is its own pack with uniquely created textures. Classic Faithful emulates the style of Vattic's original textures, which in comparison to the newer textures are quite similar, but tend to be somewhat smoother and simpler. Classic Faithful comes in two varieties: Classic Faithful Programmer Art includes the actual original Faithful textures, based on Minecraft's older pre-1.14 textures. Classic Faithful Jappa maintains the original art style, but for Minecraft's newer updated textures (Minecraft's texture overhaul was led by someone known as Jappa, hence the name). This version also has both a 32x and a 64x version, with the 64x version simply known as Classic Faithful 64x. However, the 64x version is no longer maintained.

All these versions are ultimately quite similar, and which to use comes down to personal preference. You can use our comparison tool below to help determine which you prefer.
